1 without any other person 单独;独自:
The old man lives alone.那个老人独自居住。Are you alone? Can I speak to you for a moment?你单独一个人吗?我跟你谈一会儿,行吗?I don't like walking home alone after dark.天黑以后,我不喜欢一个人走回家。
Alone and lonely both mean that you are not with other people. Lonely (USlonesome) means that you are unhappy about this, but alone does not usually suggest either happiness or unhappiness. Alone cannot be used before a noun. You can also use on your own and by yourself to mean ‘alone’. These expressions are more informal and very common in spoken English. alone 和 lonely 都指单独一人。lonely(美 lonesome)表示对这种情况感到不快乐;alone 则不表示快乐与否。alone 不可以用于名词之前。也可以用 on your own 和 by yourself 来表达“alone”的意思。这些词语多用于非正式的场合,常用于口语。
2 (after a noun or pronoun 用于名词或代词后) only 只有;仅:
You alone can help us.只有你才能帮我们。The rent alone takes up most of my salary.单单房租就花去我的大部份薪金。
go it alone to start working on your own without the usual help 独自干
